Fish oil

Fish oil is arguably one of the most important supplements available. It has many proven health benefits and is currently recommended by the Australian Heart Foundation for a healthy heart. Studies have shown fish oil may also provide the following benefits:

1. Decreased rate of certain cancers including breast, colon and prostate.
2. Improved mental health for conditions such as depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and schizophrenia.
3. Improvement for a variety of skin conditions including psoriasis and excema.
4. It also acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory, giving widespread benefits throughout the body for conditions such as arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

What is Fish oil? 

Fish oil is derived from the tissue of oily fish. Deep sea, cold water fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, and herring provide the most concentrated sources.

Fish oil contains the essential omega 3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both of which are used in the formation of eicosanoids, which reduce inflammation, and perform a variety of other vital functions within your body.

Deep-sea predatory fish do not actually produce omega 3 fatty acids, but rather accumulate them from eating smaller fish that have consumed microalgae, or the fish that eat micro algae.

Why do we need Fish oil?

The reason fish oil is important is because it contains essential omega 3 fatty acids. They are considered essential fatty acids because they cannot be synthesized by your body, and must be obtained through diet or supplements. Essential omega 3 fatty acids are vital for normal metabolism and body function.

Why do we need Omega 3 Fatty acids?

Omega 3 fatty acids play a vital role in normal body function. Studies have shown omega 3 fatty acids may be helpful for the following:

Heart Disease:
Studies have shown fish oil to lower the levels of triglycerides, and decrease the rate of heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis. Fish oil is currently recommended by the Australian Heart foundation for a healthy heart.

High Blood Pressure:
Current studies suggest that diets rich in omega 3 fatty acids may lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.

High cholesterol:
Diets high in omega 3 fatty acids tend to have higher levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol)

Cancer:
Clinical studies show the possible anti-cancer effects of omega 3 fatty acids, particularly for breast, colon, and prostate cancer.

Depression:
The results are still inconclusive, but some studies have shown improvement in patients who take omega 3 fatty acids.

Lupus: 
Lupus symptoms have been shown to decrease in patients who took fish oil supplements.

Skin disorders:
Skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis have been shown to improve in studies with fish oil supplements.

Rheumatoid arthritis:
A small number of studies have shown the symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis- particularly joint pain, and morning stiffness to decrease when taking fish oil

Pregnancy:
Promotes fetal, and infant brain development.

Inflammatory Conditions within your Body:
Your body uses omega 3 fatty acids to create a compound called resolving D2, which reduces inflammation. Current medical research suggests this could be one of the keys behind the effectiveness of fish oil, and the reason it acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory in your body.
