What Is Pilates?

The Pilates method is a form of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. The main focus of Pilates is to reinforce the importance of mind to control all body movements, ensuring the correct muscles are involved in each movement. Pilates targets the core postural muscles that give support to the spine, to help bring the body back to balance.

The main differences between Pilates and all other forms of exercise is the importance it places on increasing the strength of the core postural muscles, particularly the transverse abdominus. Pilates also stands alone when it comes to the specificity of muscles used when controlling body movement. When performed correctly, Pilates require precise muscle groups to be engaged for each movement.

For Pilates exercises to be performed correctly, it is essential that classes are conducted by qualified and experienced instructors in an established Pilates studio.

What Are The Benefits Of Pilates?

Pilates, when performed correctly, with qualified instructors offers major health benefits, establishes a strong mind body connection, improves posture, reduces back pain, and sculpts the abs better than every other form of exercise.

Research has shown that Pilates improves:

  • Spinal movement
  • Flexibility
  • Posture
  • Body awareness
  • Low back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Core strength – particularly the transverse abdominals

Pilates is a safe and convenient form of exercise that is suitable for people of all ages. It is used by many professional athletes and sporting clubs as part of their regular fitness routine. Pilates is often the preferred exercise of choice by Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Remedial massage therapists, General Practitioners and Orthopaedic surgeons for rehabilitation from spinal and joint injuries. It is also a great way to condition the body before, during, and after pregnancy.

If you are currently experiencing back, neck or joint pain that doesn’t seem to be responding to your current treatment plan, then Pilates may be perfect for you!
